GreenFi x Ocean Conservancy Partnership Overview

We’re excited to announce the partnership between GreenFi and Ocean Conservancy to help protect and restore our ocean ecosystems!

Protecting the planet means addressing climate change at every level, including our oceans. That’s why we’re proud to continue funding Ocean Conservancy’s climate-focused initiatives in 2025, helping them tackle the biggest threats to marine ecosystems while advancing science-based solutions to the climate crisis.

Read on for all the details.

Ocean Conservancy Has Been Protecting Our Oceans for Over 50 Years

Since 1972, Ocean Conservancy has been at the forefront of ocean protection, using science, policy, and community action to protect marine ecosystems and coastal communities. Their work spans from the Arctic to the tropics, addressing everything from plastic pollution to biodiversity loss. Through programs like the International Coastal Cleanup® (ICC) and the Global Ghost Gear Initiative® (GGGI), they’re not only cleaning our oceans, they’re restoring habitats, advancing groundbreaking research, and shaping global policy.

Oceans are critical to regulating our planet’s climate. They absorb roughly a quarter of human-caused carbon emissions and act as a global heat sink, but climate change is putting this vital system under pressure. Rising ocean temperatures, acidification, and habitat loss threaten biodiversity, fisheries, and coastal communities worldwide.

Tackling the Ocean’s Biggest Challenges and Making a Real Impact

Here’s a closer look at some of the specific projects that GreenFi’s "Pay What Is Fair" contributions are helping fund:

Global Trash Removal at Scale

Large-scale coastal cleanups remain at the heart of Ocean Conservancy’s mission. In 2024, over 172,000 volunteers removed 34+ million pounds of ocean trash across 73 countries. In 2025, these efforts continue, including major cleanups in Belize, Cameroon, and other coastal communities, keeping momentum strong ahead of the 40th anniversary of the International Coastal Cleanup this fall.

Fighting Ghost Gear in Critical Habitats

In Mexico, Ocean Conservancy worked with local fishers to collect and recycle 175,750 pounds of old fishing nets in 2024 alone, turning them into sustainable products like hat brims and sunglasses. In the Gulf of Maine, dive teams and fishermen partnered to remove 13,500 pounds of abandoned lobster traps and rope from Casco Bay. Lost fishing gear continues to threaten marine life, and GreenFi is supporting Ocean Conservancy’s ongoing 2025 projects to collect and recycle abandoned nets and trap

Protecting Fragile Coral Reefs and UNESCO Sites

Our support also helps fund coral reef and habitat restoration efforts. In Mexico’s Pacific Coast and the British Virgin Islands, divers and rangers are actively removing debris from UNESCO World Heritage sites and endangered species habitats, ensuring these critical ecosystems can thrive for generations to come.

Safeguarding the Arctic

Ocean Conservancy is leading advocacy to protect the Central Arctic Ocean from threats like deep-sea mining and unregulated shipping, ensuring one of the last pristine ocean ecosystems remains intact for future generations.

Advancing Ocean Science & Policy

GreenFi-funded contributions are helping Ocean Conservancy push the boundaries of ocean science and policy in 2025, with a focus on addressing plastic pollution, climate change, and harmful nutrient runoff:

  • Policy & Advocacy to Reduce Plastic Usage – Ocean Conservancy is leading groundbreaking policy efforts to reduce single-use plastics. Leveraging nearly 40 years of expertise, they helped secure passage of California’s SB 54, the strongest single-use plastics reduction law in the world. SB 54 mandates a 25% cut in single-use plastic packaging and foodware, projected to eliminate 23 million tons of plastics (the equivalent weight of 26 Golden Gate Bridges). Policy momentum continues in 2025, with studies showing that plastic bag bans and fees reduce beach litter by 25%–47% in the U.S. Local action is also making waves: in Florida, Ocean Conservancy supported a resolution in Miami-Dade County to eliminate single-use plastics and Styrofoam from county facilities, including Miami International Airport, Port of Miami, and county parks which helps curb over 5 million tons of annual waste.

  • Tracking Harmful Nutrient Pollution – Nutrients originating from failing septic tanks, storm runoff, yards, industry, and commercial farms fuel algae growth and contribute to seagrass die-offs and manatee fatalities. Ocean Conservancy is utilizing a novel fingerprinting technology to identify non-point sources of nitrogen that are fueling these harmful algae blooms and red tide events. The findings of this project have the potential to inform and influence policymaking at both the local and state levels.

  • Advancing Climate Action and Ocean Energy – In 2025, Ocean Conservancy is convening global experts to guide safe, science-based exploration of ocean-based carbon removal methods. They are shaping research to ensure future marine carbon dioxide removal approaches are effective and environmentally responsible. Additionally, they are advancing policy at COP29, the UN, and the International Maritime Organization to reduce shipping emissions, scale clean ocean energy, and drive global action toward net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.

These efforts complement hands-on cleanups and habitat restoration, creating a comprehensive approach to ocean protection.

What Our Donations Help Fund

Protecting the ocean requires ships, dive crews, research labs, community organizing, and high-level advocacy. That’s why 10% of all GreenFi ‘Pay What Is Fair’ (PWIF) contributions go directly to Ocean Conservancy.

These donations support:

  • Research into marine carbon dioxide removal and acidification mitigation

  • Policy and advocacy that reduces plastics and shipping emissions

  • Cleanups, habitat restoration, and ghost gear recycling that support resilient ecosystems

“Our ocean is truly awesome, but it is not invincible. From eliminating single-use plastics at the source to organizing beach cleanups, Ocean Conservancy advances evidence-based solutions at all levels to protect the ocean and the communities and marine life that depend on it. GreenFi’s generous support helps us work toward a healthy ocean and a thriving planet, forever and for everyone.”  — Ocean Conservancy Team
