Expanding Our Roots: GreenFi's New Tree Planting Projects in Senegal and Tanzania

At GreenFi, we're committed to making a tangible impact on the planet and its people. We're excited to share with our members the expansion of our tree-planting beyond Kenya and Haiti to two new locations: an agroforestry project in Senegal and a mangrove restoration project in Tanzania.

These projects, in partnership with veritree, will empower local communities, restore vital ecosystems, and help combat climate change.

Senegal Agroforestry: Transforming Monoculture into Thriving Ecosystems

The Challenge: Environmental Degradation

For decades, the agricultural lands in Senegal have been dominated by peanut monocropping. This practice has led to severe soil degradation, a loss of biodiversity, and has left farming communities in a vulnerable position. With nearly 60% of the rural population dependent on agriculture, the need for a sustainable alternative is critical. *

The Solution: Holistic Restoration

Our Senegal Agroforestry project is empowering 6,000 farming families to restore 30,000 hectares of land surrounding the Ndankou and Patte Forests. *

By combining innovative agroforestry techniques with ancestral knowledge, this community-driven initiative is reviving ecosystems and creating a ripple effect of food security, biodiversity, and economic resilience. The project provides tailored training, flexible schedules, and larger farming plots for women, with 50% of regional leadership roles now held by women.*

Watch this in-depth video to learn more about the unique agroforestry approach our tree planting partners are using which helps ensure the reforestation goals are achieved and outcomes for the planet and people are positive.

Types of Trees Being Planted: We are planting over 10 different tree species to create a diverse and resilient ecosystem. These include:

  • Tamarind

  • Bananas

  • Silk Cotton

  • Mammoth Baobab

  • Mahogany

Monitoring and Verification: Ensuring Impact

veritree utilizes geospatial data layers to track deforestation, land use, and overgrazing, ensuring the long-term success of the project.

This project has an estimated tree survivability rate of over 75% and is 30% more productive than monocropping over a 10-year period. Agroforestry can also reduce soil erosion by up to 90% in Sub-Saharan Africa.*

As Samba Ngar, a Lead Farmer, says, "Tree planting has given me the possibility to provide for my family, planning my garden to plant mangos, cashews and guavas will provide us with sustenance for the dry season".

Eastern Africa Mangrove Restoration: Reclaiming Coastal Ecosystems in Tanzania

The Challenge: Deforestation of Mangroves

Mangrove ecosystems are vital for coastal communities in East Africa, providing employment, livelihoods, and nutrition. However, rapid urbanization and the conversion of mangrove forests for other uses have led to significant degradation. East Africa has lost up to 40% of its mangroves due to overexploitation and a lack of effective governance.*

The Solution: Community-Supported Restoration

Our Eastern Africa Mangrove Restoration project is focused on reversing this trend. We are working with local communities in Tanzania to restore and maintain sustainable mangrove ecosystems.

This initiative creates economic opportunities and empowers women, with 80% of tree nursery participants and 58% of all staff members being women.*

Types of Trees Being Planted: We are planting 9 different species of mangroves, including:

  • Rhizophora mucronata

  • Avicennia marina

  • Ceriops tegal

  • Sonneratia

  • Lumnitzera

  • Heritiera Bruguiera

Monitoring and Verification: Using Data to Ensure Impact

To ensure the success of our restoration efforts, we use a variety of technologies, including dendrometers and soil sensors to measure tree growth and soil quality, and geospatial data layers to monitor progress.

The project has an estimated tree survivability rate of over 80% and each tree is estimated to sequester 0.31 tonnes of CO2.*

A tree planter from the boots-on-the-ground tree planting organization EarthLungs shared, "I've learned valuable skills, contributed to environmental restoration, and improved my family's well-being".

How to Get Involved

We are excited about the positive impact these new projects will have on the environment and the local communities.

Ready to make a difference? Become a part of our community and directly support inspiring tree-planting projects. Here's how it works:

  • Effortless Contributions: Activate the Plant Your Change round-up feature for your GreenFi debit card. Every purchase helps plant trees, and it's easy to re-enable if you've turned it off.

  • You're in Control: Customize your weekly round-up limits and pause anytime you need to.

  • Track Your Impact: See the results of your tree-planting contributions in the app and how they build up over time.
